Where does your automobile fall under the market segmentation system?

If you are confused before buying a new car, then the complete information of the segment type of cars will remove this dilemma of yours. Cars are placed in different segments depending on their size i.e. length and breadth. If you are fond of cars, then in the teaser of Mahindra Scorpio recently, you must have heard a word 'D-segment'. We will talk about these A, B, C, D and SUV segments here.

These are the well-known segments

You may have heard of some of the most common types of car segments like hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and MPVs, but there are different categories for each type of vehicle, which we will elaborate on.

A-segment cars are made for urban roads. These are small and low engine capacity cars in length-width. The cars in this segment also give good mileage. The A-segment is divided into two parts A1 and A2 based on cars. The A1 comes with entry-level models like Renault Kwid, Maruti Alto and Datsun Redi-Go, etc. The A2 has compact hatchbacks like Maruti WagonR, Celerio, Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago etc.

Small hatchback and premium hatchback

The cars in this segment are a little higher and wider than the A-segment cars. This segment has a 4 cylinder engine from 1.0 to 1.2 liters. The B-segment is also divided into two parts B1 (Small Hatchback) and B2 (Premium Hatchback) like A. The B1 has cars like Hyundai grand i10 Nios and Maruti Swift. The B2 features the Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz, Tata Altroz and Maruti Baleno.

Sub-compact Sedan and small Sedan

The sedans in India start from car segment C1. It also has two parts C1 (sub-compact sedan) and C2 (small sedan). Sub-compact sedan cars are similar to the B-segment hatchback, but have more boot space. The sub-compact sedans include Hyundai Aura, Honda Amaze, Tata Tigor, Maruti Suzuki Dzire. The small sedan has Hyundai Verna, Honda City, Toyota Yaris, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz etc. The cars in the C2 (Small Sedan) segment are more than 4 meters in length.

Mid-size sedan / sedan Family Cars

D-segment cars are the first choice of rich people. There are luxury cars in this segment which give a lot of space and comfort. Honda Civic, BMW 3-Series, Skoda Octavia, Hyundai Elantra etc. are luxury cars designed for this segment. These cars generate more power and torque than the C-segment, but this segment is not known for power but for the comfortable premium design interior and luxury-rich features.

Multipurpose Vehicles (MPVs)

This is a segment that has been designed for long and 7 to 8 seater trains coming in low budget. These cars are not powered by large sedans or engines like SUVs, but compete with them in space. MPVs also come in less than Rs 10 lakh in terms of price and also in more than Rs 30-35 lakh. Maruti Ertiga, XL6, Kia Carence, Toyota Innova and Kia Carnival are some of the examples of MPVs.

The SUV segment is divided into B, C and D

In recent years, the SUV segment has been the most preferred car segment in the country. Unlike MPVs, SUVs are large and really powerful cars, which can be taken on any kind of path. SuVs are mainly divided into 3 categories B, C and D on the basis of size. The D segment of SUVs is also full of luxury features like the D-segment of the sedan.

The most basic SUV segment (SUV-B) in India includes entry-level SUVs like Maruti Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue and Kia Sonnet, Mahindra XUV300. These are sub-4-meter trains, which are higher than similar priced sedans or hatchbacks. The C-segment SUV has models like Mahindra Scorpio, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Aster. The D-segment SUV has cars like Tata Harrier, MG Hector, Mahindra XUV700. This segment also includes SUVs with 4×4 technology.

Mahindra is bringing its new Scorpio, which will be launched in June. The Scorpio is yet to be introduced in the C-segment SUV, but news is that the new Scorpio will be launched in the D-segment.
